Let’s admit that although “Qarabağ” was considered the favorite in the UEFA Champions League 3rd qualifying round clash against North Macedonia’s “Shkëndija,” there was still some concern among both the Aghdam side and their fans. The reason was that the Skopje club had unexpectedly defeated the strong Romanian representative, FCSB (Steaua), in the 2nd qualifying round. Having eliminated the prestigious Romanian team from the tournament, Jeton Bekiri’s side came into the match with a boosted appetite for victory. That’s why Gurbanov spoke cautiously at the pre-match press conference.

However, as soon as the game began, it became clear that “Shkëndija” was clearly weaker than “Qarabağ.”
In the first half, “Qarabağ” confirmed their dominance with a goal from Toral Bayramov, scored from the penalty spot. The 11-meter kick was earned by Andrade, who showed determination in that episode.

Just like in the first half, “Qarabağ” also outplayed their opponent in the second half. Zoubir could have increased the score at least three times. The visitors, meanwhile, had only one serious scoring opportunity in the second half. In another episode, Jafarquliyev’s rough mistake nearly led to a dangerous chance, but Ibraimi’s shot from outside the penalty area was all that came of it.

It’s worth noting that Gurbanov’s team appeared to be in better physical and functional shape at the start of this season compared to previous ones. The team looked more organized, mobile, and tactically prepared. Therefore, having comfortably overcome the North Macedonian side, “Qarabağ” will also be among the favorites in the play-off stage.
