Today, the first-leg matches of the third qualifying round of the UEFA Europa Conference League will take place. Having already achieved a result considered a major upset, Araz-Nakhchivan will face Cyprus’ Omonia at Dalga Arena.
Omonia, one of the most renowned clubs from Greek Cyprus, has extensive experience in European competitions and has already faced Azerbaijani clubs three times. In 2021, during the Conference League, the Cypriots were heavily beaten by Qarabağ (1:4 and 2:2). Later, they took revenge on Zira (2024 – 6:0 and 0:1) and Gabala (2023 – 3:2 and 4:1). Both ties were also in the Conference League.
Interestingly, Gabala’s head coach during those matches was none other than Elmar Baxshiyev, who is now at the helm of Araz-Nakhchivan. So, for Baxshiyev, this is a chance for revenge.
Omonia, a 21-time Cypriot champion, reached this round by eliminating Torpedo Kutaisi. The team is known for its organized and disciplined defense, especially in European competitions. They often rely on quick counterattacks from deep positions. It wouldn’t be surprising if they concede possession to Araz-Nakhchivan and look to strike with sudden attacks. Omonia also tends to play with a numerical advantage in midfield.
Araz-Nakhchivan impressed in their previous matches against Aris, surprising many in a positive way. The team demonstrated that it can play disciplined football across all lines. Any minor absences in the squad should not significantly disrupt that discipline. Baxshiyev also hinted at this during the pre-match press conference.
