Elnur Mammadli has been removed from his position as the head of AFFA’s press service. He has been replaced by journalist Murad Akhundov. On his Facebook page, the well-known sports commentator shared the news of his departure, stating that he joined AFFA two years ago with great hopes and believed he would act as a bridge between journalists and AFFA.
It should be noted that Mammadli took on this role during the turmoil that followed the departure of AFFA’s former General Secretary, Elkhan Mammadov. Becoming the press secretary of an organization whose image and reputation had been severely damaged required great risk and courage. However, the reality is that Mammadli’s reputation and connections in the media played a role in softening the sharp criticism directed at AFFA. Even the harshest critics of AFFA had, in recent times, toned down their rhetoric out of respect for Mammadli.
From Mammadli’s post, it is clear that his hopes and beliefs are tied to football. However, one must not forget that for many years, AFFA has primarily served as a convenient place for the realization of personal ambitions and hopes. It seems that the personal goals and plans of AFFA’s new leadership do not align with the football-focused plans of the experienced professional in his area of responsibility.
